Interview with Life in Film

Life in Film could have written the book on ‘how to be indie’. Since they were first brought to our attention at TGR, it has to be said, we’ve been hooked and they have been picked up loud and clear on our ‘Tips for 2012′ radar! Combining the darkness of Joy Division with the Uplifting guitar riffs of Marr, The four-piece certainly look the part and have the quality of tunes to back it up. By no means newcomers to the scene, the band first emerged back in 2009 and since have been quietly bubbling under. Their alarmingly catchy tunes, such as last single ‘The Idiot‘ and the ability to hold their own on stage all makes for an exciting 2012 prospect . We caught up with Samuel Fry (Lead Singer) and Dominic Sennett (Bass) to talk about the new album, working with Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), the upcoming gig at XOYO and Rolf Harris… Yep, Rolf Harris…

Let’s start with the album. Tell us a bit about it and how’s it coming along. What’s it been like working with Stephen Street? (The Smiths, Blur)

Its been going great, there’s a few older tracks that we’ve been looking to lay down for a while so its nice to get those finished. And its always really excited laying down the new ones and hearing them back for the first time! It was brilliant working with Stephen, he made us all feel very calm and relaxed and that definitely got the best out of us in terms of performances. We seemed to really connect in terms of the sound we were trying to achieve and so it was a very excited process.

Last year, amongst other gigs, you supported The Rifles on their Freedom Run tour how did the that go?

It was fantastic, we had only met The Rifles once before so didn’t know what they would be like but they are some of the nicest lads we’ve ever met, we got on instantly and had a real laugh. Plus we got to play loads of sold out shows which is an amazing thing to do night after night.

Your heading to XOYO London in March, any plans to add further dates?

There will definitely be a lot of UK dates announced soon which will go up on our website as soon as they are confirmed www.lifeinfilm.co.uk

It’s a cliché question I know, but who would you say the band draws from influence wise? Do you all have similar tastes or is it a fusion of different genres?

Its a big mix really ….. Steps (particularly H), NDubz, Rolf Harris

Next single ‘Carla’ is released in early April and having listened to this, there’s definitely a love story in their somewhere?? Can you tell us a bit about the track.

Yes, it’s a sentimental song about dealing with the many difficult aspects of life and love.

The gig review is all about giving fans a voice to share their gig reviews with the world. Is there anyone that you’ve seen live recently/or past that have struck a chord (metaphorically speaking of course)?

We would like to say The Book Club, they toured with us on The Rifles tour. The music is very catchy, fresh and interesting. To top it off they are all wicked guys! they will be supporting us at our XOYO show on the 8th March so come down and check them out.

Finally on a lighter note, if the bands ‘life’ were to be put ‘in film’ which actors would be cast? And more importantly, who’s doing the soundtrack?

Dominic would be played by Jack Nicholson, Edward by Arnold Schwarzenegger , Sam by Bobby D and Micky by Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie style) it would be great to see those old boys on stage together. Soundtrack by Cream and Simon & Garfunkel
